The Venue

The Orthodox Academy of Crete is a modern Conference Center situated in an exceptionally beautiful location only a few meters from the sea and next to the Gonia Monastery (17 th Century) on the Greek island of Crete. It is located 22 kilometers from the city of Chania and 39 kilometers from its international airport. Chania is the westernmost prefecture of Crete, with the city of Chania as its capital. The conference center of the Orthodox Academy of Crete is located about 10 minutes by foot outside the small fishing village of Kolymbari.

Late September is the optimal time of the year to visit Crete. Daytime temperatures do not reach as unbearably high as in summer and the weather is usually nice. The sea temperature allows for morning or evening swims.

  • Heraklion Airport (Nikos Kazantzakis Airport) - (code: HER)

Buses from Chania to Kolymbari takes half an hour, cost 2.90 EUR and go every 30 to 45 minutes, see here. To go from Chania to Kolymbari takes half an hour. A taxi for the same trip will cost you 25 Euro (50 EUR from Chania airport). At www.bus-service-crete-ktel.com you can also find the timetables from Herakleion airport.

Alternatively, you can fly to Athens which is also served by European cheap airlines. From there you take the boat to Souda, the harbour of Chania. The boats usually leave at 9 pm and arrive at 5.30 am. Fast ferries make the trip in four hours. Prices vary bewteen 30 and 70 EUR depending on your choice of chair or bed on the boat. The details can be found here. People arriving to the Souda port (~6 km from Chania) will find regular city buses leaving to Chania (and arriving close to the KTEL, long-distance bus station) every few minutes.
